An important responsibility of every scientist is to explain what they do to both young learners and the public. As such I am always happy to give radio interviews or general public seminars.

Higgs Boson Public Lecture
After the July 4th announcement of the observation of a particle consistent with the Higgs Boson, there was significant public interest in learning what is the Higgs Boson. I presented this public lecture at several venues including Bishops Diocesan College, African Institute for Mathematical Sciences, and University of Cape Town.

ATLAS Videos
Here are some ATLAS video clips that may help to understand particle physics and the LHC.

Cosmic Connections Project
In an effort to connect learners with scientific research I have started the Cosmic Connections Project, a project similar to the ATLA project. Cape Town is an ideal place for such a project, as it combines critically needed science outreach with research. Using simple Cherenkov detectors read out with inexpensive photo-sensitive devices and controlled by open-source software on GPS enabled smart phones, cosmic ray detectors could be placed at many high schools in the Cape Town area. This direct contact between researchers and high school students will give the students a perspective on what higher education can bring to their lives.

This project is still very much in it’s infancy, with inexpensive detector technologies still being investigated.
