RW James was a physicist and crystallographer at the University of Cape Town who played a key role in the history of the Department of Physics and the university as a whole.
Before he joined UCT, he participated in an ill-fated expedition to the Antarctica, led by Sir Ernest Shackleton. This expedition has been re-enacted as the IAMX movie "Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure", which will be shown at the Department of Physics.
