CTMP in a nutshell

The Centre for Theoretical & Mathematical Physics (CTMP) is a communications platform for the theoretical and mathematical physicists dispersed over the Physics and Applied Mathematics departments of UCT. As an inter-departmental research unit it is devoted to the promotion of interdisciplinary research in the areas of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Cosmology and General Relativity, Theoretical Physics (High Energy-Particle and Astro-Particle Physics, String Theory), and Applied Mathematics. It strives to nurture the exchange of new concepts and ideas between its members and a veritable stream of international visitors. As a natural consequence this immerses our students in a lively research environment on par with leading institutions worldwide, featuring weekly research seminars, post-graduate lecture series, workshops, conferences, and summer schools.

Short history: 1984: Founded as the Institute for Theoretical Physics and Astrophysics (ITPA) with Jan Rafelski as director until 1987. 1989: D.R. Matravers takes directorship. 1990: C.A. Dominguez takes charge. 2008: Igor Barashenkov becomes director, name changed to Centre for Theoretical Physics and Astrophysics (CTPA). 2010: Name changed to Centre for Theoretical & Mathematical Physics (CTMP). 2011: Heribert Weigert takes directorship.
