Before Submission
☐ Double-check the manuscript for errors
☐ Confirm all co-authors have read it and agree with the content
☐ Format the manuscript and files to match the target journal's submission requirements
☐ Save a backup copy of the final manuscript and dataset
☐ Make sure co-authors can access the files if they need them
Submission Package
☐ Write a cover letter to the editor-in-chief highlighting the manuscript's strengths
☐ Include a list of suggested reviewers
☐ Disclose any conflicts of interest
☐ Include a statement confirming the manuscript isn't under consideration elsewhere
☐ Get the corresponding author to sign the cover letter
☐ Submit to only one journal at a time - never simultaneously to multiple journals
During Peer Review
☐ Track the manuscript's status through the journal's submission portal
☐ Respond promptly if editors or reviewers request clarification
If Revisions Are Requested
☐ Note the resubmission deadline; request an extension in advance if you can't meet it
☐ Address every reviewer comment - if you disagree with one, explain why in the rebuttal note rather than ignoring it
☐ Submit a clear list of changes made, alongside the revised manuscript
After Acceptance
☐ Read the publishing agreement carefully, especially copyright-transfer terms (negotiate early if needed)
☐ Verify all authors' names, degrees, and affiliations are correct on the forms
☐ Disclose any conflicts of interest
☐ Respond to copyeditor queries
☐ Review page proofs/galley proofs carefully for meaning changes, and check image/table placement
