David Maphisa will present the Department of Statistical Science seminar with a talk entitled, "Hierarchical distance sampling and occupancy models to inform adaptive management of high elevation grasslands of eastern SA – 5 years bird study"

David Maphisa is a researcher at the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and a member of SEEC in the Department of Statistical Sciences. He obtained his PhD degree from the University of Cape Town in 2015. David was born in KwaZulu-Natal and grew up in Lesotho. In 1993 he enrolled at the University of Lesotho where he trained as a teacher. He went back to KwaZulu-Natal to enrol at the then University of Natal for a BSc Honours degree in Zoology. After completing his Masters degree in Conservation Biology at the PercyFitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology, he worked for BirdLife South Africa as programme manager at the Ingula Pumped Storage Scheme.
