At the recent National Research Foundation (NRF) Awards ceremony, where leading researchers in their respective fields are recognised, Professor Ed February, Department of Biological Sciences at UCT received the Hamilton Naki Award.  The award is named after a self-taught surgeon who trained generations of medical students in surgical techniques and the award honours individuals for achieving world-class research performance despite considerable challenges.  

The awards are made based on peer evaluation and according to international best practice.  The work of the researchers receiving awards is assessed for, among other things, their contribution to the field of study focusing on quality and impact

Professor February's award citation acknowledges that he has played a pivotal role in directing the funding of ecological research and in the development of nature reserves.  It states that "He has garnered numerous awards and fellowships, including a gold medal for his work in the protection of biodiversity of the Cape Floristic Region; The Cape Times Fellowship; and a Ford Foundation Fellowship.
