Dr Vivian Hsueh Hua Chen  of Nanyang Technological University will present the School of IT Colloquium with a talk entitled, "From psychology to human computer interaction: How do video games influence social attitudes and behaviors?"

Abstract:

Video games as an interactive and simulated media environment open up new opportunities for influencing people’s attitude and behaviours. Practitioners and researcher have put in much effort on gamification for learning and social change. This talk discusses how video games influence people’s attitudes and behaviours by looking at : 1)players’ gaming experiences in the game; 2) the impacts of video game play on social attitudes and behaviours; 3) how the way gamers use various digital game features is related to the effects of gaming.

Bio:

Dr. Vivian Hsueh Hua Chen is an Associate Professor at Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Dr. Chen’s research interests include new communication technologies, virtual reality, impacts of digital games, gamification,  human computer interaction, intercultural communication, and interpersonal communication. She has been awarded a total of approximately US$ 5 million of research funding. Dr. Chen has published extensively in well-known journals such as Computers in Human Behavior, New Media & Society, and highly reputable conference proceedings such as ACM CHI and SIGGRAPH. She is on the editorial board for Journal of Child Computer Interaction and the Journal of International and Intercultural Communication
