Hielke Jelsma will present the Department of Geological Sciences seminar with a talk entitled, "The Central African Craton revealed using SHRIMP U-Pb zircon geochronology". 

Hielke Jelsma is Principal Geologist in Anglo American. He manages a small group of people involved in global project generative work within the Discovery Strategy team of Exploration and Geosciences, seeking new opportunities and transformative value for the group of companies. He completed his undergraduate training in geology and structural geology at the Free University in Amsterdam in 1989 and obtained a Ph.D. in 1993. Between 1993 and 2003 he worked in academia (Harare, Cape Town) and as geological consultant. In 2003 he joined De Beers and, more recently, in 2014 Anglo American. Industry experience includes the evaluation of exploration areas and mining operations in six continents. He has specialist expertise in field mapping, structural geology and tectonics, data integration and target generation (diamonds, base metals), and in the execution of research projects and management of R&D portfolios. Ongoing research interests include mineral systems, regional metallogenesis, supercontinent cyclicity, tectonics, lithosphere geodynamics, and prospectivity mapping approaches, and applied GIS, topics on which he has published 60 papers in peer-reviewed international journals. He is registered as a Professional Natural Scientist and is a Fellow of the Geological Society of South Africa. His hobbies include long distance and mountain running, hiking and reading.
