Kuang Chen will present the School of IT Seminar with a talk entitled, "Captricity and AI for Social Impact". 

Kuang will share the story of an ICTD startup from computer science graduate research to technology company. Together we will discuss the boundaries of what AI methods can realistically achieve in the short term, and some tradeoffs and design decisions that were necessary. We will also explore how a social enterprise can balance impact and profit.

Kuang Chen is a social entrepreneur and computer scientist. Kuang was founder CEO of Captricity, where he developed the first AI that reads handwriting better than humans. He was recipient of MIT Technology Review’s ‘35 Innovators Under 35’ award in the humanitarian category for his graduate research focused on data-centric approaches to increase the efficiency of health clinics in Tanzania and Uganda. Kuang holds a PhD in Computer Science from UC Berkeley, and a BA in Comparative History of Ideas from the University of Washington.
