Dr Susan M Miller will present the Department of Biological Sciences seminar with a talk entitled, "From Beasts to Birds: Conservation Genetics in Action"

Conservation genetics is a rapidly changing field. There are an increasing number of genetic techniques available which can be applied to conservation objectives. I will explore the application of some of these techniques to real conservation challenges. Specifically, I will discuss how genetics 1) informs lion (Panthera leo) management on small reserves in South Africa, 2) can detect hybridisation between common (Aepyceros melampus melampus) and black-faced impala (A. m. petersi) in Namibia and 3) will help clarify the phylogeny within the Karoo Lark (Calendulauda albescens) complex in southern Africa. Genetics can be a powerful tool to assist in conservation decisions. With decreasing costs and increasing computing power, genetics is increasingly accessible and is included as a component of many conservation programs.
