Dear Science Students

A warm welcome to the Science Faculty at UCT and best wishes for 2022!

Our first-year students have been attending the orientation programme and returning students registering for the new academic year. We are now in the third year of teaching and learning under the coronavirus pandemic. Experience from the last two years points to the need for increased face-to-face (F2F) mode of teaching and learning. Science is committed to offer blended teaching, with F2F activities planned by our departments. We wish to explain key aspects of our approach to teaching and learning in 2022.

1. The faculty has planned for in-person teaching and learning. In this regard all departmental plans have aspects of F2F teaching & learning, which will vary depending on the size of class and the demands of the field of study.
2. Field-based teaching and learning will adopt the pre-covid plans but ensuring all the health & safety protocols are observed.
3. Examinations and tests will be F2F and invigilated. Departments will advise students on assessments.
4. To maximize F2F engagements you will be required to wear KN95 masks, which will be supplied by the university.
5. We expect science students to be in Cape Town and to have reasonable connectivity and facilities for enhanced engagement though digital technologies. This applies to undergraduate and postgraduate students.

If you have any question about a particular course, please direct them to your course convenors. Deputy deans are available to address general questions about the faculty approach to teaching and you can reach them by email.
