Julia studied geoecology at the Universities of Bayreuth and Karlsruhe in Germany and also spent a year abroad at the Agricultural University of Uppsala, Sweden in 2006. She has studied a diversity of topics (e.g. meteorology, biogeochemistry, renewable energy, and environmental economics) and worked for several institutions including the Fraunhofer ISI in Karlsruhe and the KfW Development Bank in Frankfurt.
Julia later decided to focus on questions about landscape ecology and conservation and, in 2011, completed an MSc on land use change and ecosystem services in the European Mediterranean Region under the supervision of Dr C. Neff and Prof. T. Koellner. Julia perceives our environment as a social-ecological system that is influenced by both biophysical and anthropogenic drivers at different spatial and temporal scales and is currently registered as a PhD student at the FitzPatrick Institute. Her project focuses on understanding the interactions of people and ecosystems in, around, and between the private protected areas of the Cape.
