A taught MSc programme at the University of Cape Town

Conservation biology is the study of how best to sustain and manage linked systems of people and nature. This field is increasingly important as human impacts on the biosphere become more significant.

The FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology at the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Cape Town offers an intensive, prestigious taught MSc in Conservation Biology for up to 14 students per year.

The Conservation Biology MSc produces graduates equipped to tackle complex environmental challenges across Africa and globally. The course pairs a rigorous scientific foundation with the practical tools needed to solve real-world problems. Emphasising a holistic, interdisciplinary approach, the curriculum builds strong skills in data analysis, natural history, writing and communication – the precise capabilities employers value. This approach produces graduates who compete successfully in the job market and make a difference in the field, with over 80% of our graduates going into careers in conservation.

Course dates for 2027: 11 Jan 2027 – mid-Feb 2028

The course will be taught in-person in Cape Town.
