Field Assistant: APNR Ground-Hornbill Project
The project is based in the Associated Private Nature Reserves (APNR) in the Greater Kruger, South Africa, and works towards slowing and reversing the decline of the Southern Ground-Hornbill, while carrying out fundamental research. For the past 23 years, researchers from the FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology have been researching Southern Ground-Hornbills. Our efforts are focussed on installing and monitoring artificial nests and studying the birds’ reproduction, behaviours, and the impacts of climate change.
We are looking for a fit and enthusiastic field assistant to help monitor ground-hornbill nests between November 2023 and March 2024. Duties will also include behavioural observations of the birds, installing camera traps, assisting with handling and measuring chicks, as well as data entry and data extraction from camera trap videos. Fieldwork consists of long days and early mornings, with a lot of time spent driving from nest to nest. This position will suit someone who is looking for experience in conservation or research. There is also scope for the ideal candidate, to go on and conduct their own MSc or PhD research on Southern Ground-Hornbills in the study site. Ideal for someone local to the Hoedspruit area, however, accommodation can be arranged (in remote location).
Essential skills and requirements:
• Drivers license with 4x4 driving experience.
• Must not be afraid of heights and able to work up a ladder.
• Fit and able to manoeuvre and secure a 6m ladder.
• Available for at least 3 months.
• Willing to work weekends and be flexible to meet project needs.
• Have their own personal vehicle, not required for fieldwork but for personal use due to remote location.
• Be friendly and approachable, able to communicate with landowners/stakeholders.
• Have a passion for the environment, conservation, and birds.
Desired skills and requirements (although training can be given):
• Experience and knowledge of the bush (in an area with dangerous wild animals).
• Basic D.I.Y skills.
• BSc degree.
• Computer and data entry skills (Microsoft Excel and Access)
• Experience with using camera traps.
Interested candidates should send a CV and cover letter outlining relevant experience, along with two contactable references to Carrie Hickman (carriejhickman@gmail.com). Remuneration will be based on experience. Closing date for applications is 24th September 2023.
