The Niven Library holds arguably the most comprehensive ornithological literature collection in Africa and probably the most complete collection of African ornithological literature in the World. A new era has been launched with the Niven Library receiving its first eBook from a publishing house on 18 July 2012. It is envisaged that the new electronic aspect of the library will be set up to contain not only electronic journals and PDF articles, but also digital format books as ePUB and ePDF versions. The library user will ‘borrow’ the access to digital versions similar to book loans, with similar limitations on the duration of a ‘loan’ to borrowing a physical copy. Co-incidentally, the first eBook supplied to the Niven Library is a Fitztitute publication, the second edition of Gamebirds of Southern Africa authored by Rob Little and Tim Crowe, and illustrated by Simon Barlow, supplied by New Holland Publishing (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd.
