The Fitztitute has enjoyed a very special 2010, celebrating the Institute’s 50th Anniversary. While the proud record of research, teaching and public outreach has been built over 50 years of hard work and strategic planning, this year has given us the opportunity to engage in a number of activities to increase its public profile and to consolidate our financial security.

The year started with a Vice-Chancellor’s Open Lecture by Prof. Norman Myers which was followed by a Fitz 50th Golf Day and the Fitz 50th Annual General Meeting, both held at the Steenberg Golf Estate. The Fitz 50th logo was featured on the front cover of 15 of the 20 issues of the UCT Monday Paper during 2010. We also saw eight Fitz articles featured in theMonday Paper during this year. The revamped Fitz website was launched on the UCT website on 17 February 2010. Thereafter, 10 Fitz news items appeared on the UCT website during the year, with three items featuring the Fitz appearing in the last week of November – that is probably some sort of record for a single UCT institution.

All of this and the assistance given with external media partners has helped make this 50th Anniversary year a wonderful exercise in marketing and profiling of the Institute. It gives us great pleasure therefore to extend our warmest appreciation and gratitude to the UCT Communications and Marketing team for their unwavering support and assistance without which the achievements and celebrations of this year would not have been the same.
