The Astronomy department has renovated the dome on top of the RW James building on upper campus and has installed a new Celestron 14-in telescope in January 2013 with the help of the SARChI chair, Prof Claude Carignan, Mr Luc Turbide and PhD student Thuso Simon.
This telescope, equipped with a modern CCD and spectrograph, will be used for teaching purposes as part of the undergraduate astrophysics curriculum. At a function in December 2013, we officially named the teaching observatory the Tony Fairall Teaching Observatory.
On this page we will describe the kind of projects that the students will do with this optical telescope and show case some of the highlights.
