UCT EGS Students Reflect on SSAG 2025
A team of Environmental & Geographical Science students from UCT attended the Society of
South African Geographers (SSAG) Student Conference 2025 at the University of
Johannesburg. The conference explored the theme “Geography and Sustainability: How Can We
Shape a Better World for All?” and featured diverse sessions, student presentations, and a moving
field trip to Soweto.
In their reflections, students shared how the experience built research confidence, expanded
perspectives on sustainability, and sparked new academic connections. Highlights included
presentations on water resources, sustainable waste management, and colonial legacies in
conservation, alongside powerful lessons from Johannesburg’s urban landscape.
