Stefan Schoombie
Dr. Stefan Schoombie is a biologist with a keen interest in electronic technologies and their integration into ecological research. With a background in biology, Dr. Schoombie's expertise lies in leveraging electronic tools to enhance ecological studies. Over the past eight years, he has dedicated his research efforts to studying seabirds on Marion Island, conducting both his MSc and PhD research through the FitzPatrick Institute.
During his postgraduate studies, Dr. Schoombie focused primarily on the distribution and fine-scale behavior of various albatross and large petrel species in the Southern Ocean. He utilized a variety of bio-logging devices to collect data and gain insights into the movements and behaviors of these seabirds.
Currently, Dr. Schoombie is involved in a project that utilizes data collected by video loggers and inertial measurement units attached to chinstrap penguins. His research aims to identify prey capture events through the application of supervised machine-learning and computer vision techniques. This innovative approach allows for a deeper understanding of the foraging behavior of chinstrap penguins and their interactions with their environment.
