Hassan Sadiq (supervised by Dr Miguel Lacerda) recently received the second prize in the South African Statistical Association (SASA) postgraduate competition for his paper on a fast and accurate statistical approach for identifying positions in HIV genes that evolve to impart drug resistance. His paper was based on his masters dissertation entitled "A Topic Model-Based Approach to Inferring Episodic Directional Selection in Protein-Coding Sequences" for which he received a distinction. Mr Sadiq will graduate with an MSc in Advanced Analytics this December.
Izak Nel (supervised by Dr Melvin Varughese) was also awarded the third prize in the SASA Honours Project Competition for his project on Investigating specification tests for short rate diffusion models.
