The EGS department welcomed over 50 new course work postgraduates during Orientation Week (8-12 February 2016).

EGS hosts a number of postgraduate programmes, with students registered in the faculties of Science and Humanites.

The 2016 coursework intake includes:

24

EGS honours students

4

Atmospheric Sciences Honours students

12

MPhil / MSc Environment, Society and Sustainability students

12

MPhil / MSc African Climate and Development student

Numerous students are also registered for research Masters and PhD degrees covering a wonderful diversity of projects.

To assist new postgraduate students with making course choices and matching their research interests with appropriate supervisors, an intensive orientation programme was run in the department. O-week provided an invaluable opportunity for the students to meet one another, meet the staff, hear more about the courses on offer, meet past students, and learn about activities and opportunities at UCT beyond EGS.

Included amongst activities during the week were the annual departmental braai, attended by over 100 staff and students. The research students met for an afternoon to get to grips with the Research Journey they are embarking on. And the honours students poured over past dissertations and walked up to Rhodes Memorial to observe and discuss geographical processes in action.

By the end of o-week,  all our students have successfully registered, signed up to course lists, and secured research supervisors. Significantly too, new friendships are budding, and old friendships have been renewed. A promising year lies ahead!
