Accommodation
University accommodation is limited. We suggest that you consult the Student Housing and Residence Life Handbook for more information about the university accommodation requirements. There is also an Off-Campus Student Accommodation Service, which offers an alternative to the residence system. More information on this service can be found here.
Applications and their evaluation
EGS applications have different closing dates depending on which course you are applying for (please see the degrees pages for these details). The department assesses applications through selection committees that evaluation applications. These committees sit once annually for Honours applications (in October), once annually for Masters by coursework applications (in October), and twice annually for Dissertation Masters and PhD applications (in April and October). Any applications received after the submission deadlines will be carried over until the following selection committee. Applications are not considered complete without all required supporting documents. These requirements are outlined under each degree on the website.
Costs and Funding
For current fees information please see UCT’s Fees handbook here. International students are required to pay additional fees – please consult the Fees handbook for this information.
Please note that funding applications are not handled by the EGS department, but by the UCT Funding Office. There are a number of bursaries available to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Please consult the relevant handbook for undergraduate or postgraduate bursaries. Applicants are advised to consult the Postgraduate Funding Office website for the various funding calls and their closing dates. Funding calls often close at least six months prior to the intended year of registration, so it is worth looking into funding options before applying for the course. You can also consult the Postgraduate Funding Office for information on eligibility for National Research Foundation funding, as well as other scholarship calls and closing dates.
Distance learning, part-time and online courses
EGS requires students to be available for in-person engagement and does not offer part-time, distance, online, or hybrid courses. In some cases for dissertation Masters and PhD students, alternative arrangements can be made between students and supervisors, although you will still be required to attend certain events in person.
International Students
UCT’s International Academic Programme Office (IAPO) can help you to navigate fees, visas and study permits, and provide induction upon your arrival at UCT. Please see the IAPO website for more information.
