Application for Entry into the Honours Programme
Application Deadline: 30 September each year
The department offers Honours programmes in Environmental and Geographical Science and Atmospheric Science. Applicants must apply through the faculty in which they completed their undergraduate degree. Students who completed a BA or BSocSci degree should apply through the Faculty of Humanities for Honours in Environmental and Geographical Science. Students who completed a BSc degree should apply through the Faculty of Science and may apply for either Environmental and Geographical Science Honours or Atmospheric Science Honours, provided they meet the relevant admission requirements.
Applicants to EGS Honours would typically have completed an undergraduate degree in Geography, Environmental Science, or a closely related field. Applications from other disciplines will be considered where applicants can demonstrate suitable academic preparation and provide a clear motivation for pursuing EGS Honours. Applicants from other disciplinary backgrounds may also consider completing Honours in their home discipline before applying for a Master's degree in EGS, where we welcome students from a wide range of academic backgrounds.
To apply, applicants must submit the following:
- A completed UCT online application form. The application includes a letter of motivation (maximum 700 words) explaining why you wish to undertake an Honours degree in Environmental and Geographical Science. The letter should describe your academic interests, relevant experiences, and future goals, and may include any research areas or topics that you would be interested in exploring during Honours. The letter should be written in your own voice and should help the department understand your motivation for postgraduate study and your suitability for the programme.
- Details of two academic referees.
Applicants who completed their undergraduate degree at UCT do not need to submit reference letters. Instead, they should provide the details of two referees at UCT using the following form: Internal department referee nomination
For referees within EGS, applicants need only provide the referee's name. For referees elsewhere at UCT, applicants should provide the referee's name and email address.
Applicants from institutions outside UCT should arrange for two referees to either:
• Complete the departmental reference form: External department reference form
or
• Email a reference letter directly to pgapplications.egs@uct.ac.za
