My initial research interests, stemming from my postgraduate dissertations, were sport statistics, extreme value theory, and Bayesian hierarchical modelling, the latter being predominantly applied to water and hydro-electricity management in the Orange River Basin. Of these, only sport statistics has survived as an interest to the present day, with the main areas of application being cricket and baseball. The focus of my research has gradually shifted towards statistical/machine learning applications in computer vision and natural language processing. Currently my main area of research is the application of image analysis to inform agricultural management within the agri-tech sector. My involvement in the running of one of UCT's first blended learning courses (first-year Introductory Statistics) has also led to an interest in statistics education research.
