Masters programme

  • Masters in Computational Science

Learn how to use computational science to do research in chemistry, chemical biology, biophysics and chemical physics.

The Masters in Computational Science is designed to prepare students in the methodology needed to do research in chemistry, chemical biology, biophysics and chemical physics using computational science. These academic disciplines have a critical dependence on computer simulation and large-scale data analysis to understand observed phenomena and advance disciplinary knowledge.

By focusing on either computation or informatics, students of the course will complete a combination of in-house and online training short courses in:

    • Scientific computing
    • High performance computing
    • Computational methods for data analysis
    • Data management
    • R Programming
    • Quantum mechanics
    • Statistical mechanics

    Aims

Learn how to apply scripting, mathematical modelling and informatics to:

    • Chemistry
    • Chemical biology
    • Glycobiology
    • Genomics
    • Glycomics
    • Biophysics
    • Chemical physics

And gain research methodology competence through the investigation of a substantial problem in the domain sciences.

    Outcomes

Perform research and complete a dissertation solving a modelling or informatics problem in the domain sciences. Produce scientific computer code using C++, Fortran and C, design computational models using Python or PERL, and apply or design analytics methods using R, SQL, MATLAB, or MAPLE.

Work on the frontier of computational science research.

  • Masters in Chemistry

The Masters in Chemistry course consists of an investigation of an approved topic chosen for intensive study by the student, culminating in the submission of a dissertation. The dissertation shall demonstrate the successful completion of a programme of training in research methods, a thorough understanding of the scientific principles underlying the research and an appropriate acquaintance with the relevant literature. It must be clearly presented and conform to the standards of the department and faculty. The dissertation will usually consist of a report detailing the conduct and analysis of the results of research performed under the close guidance of a suitably qualified supervisor/s. The dissertation should be well-conceived and acknowledge earlier research in the field. It should demonstrate the ability to undertake a substantial and informed piece of research, and to collect, organise and analyse material.

Doctoral programme

  • PhD in Computational Science

Develop research methodologies to advance the existing knowledge in mathematical modelling and informatics related to the domain sciences.

The PhD in Computational Science is designed to serve the critical dependence of academic disciplines such as chemistry, chemical biology, biophysics and chemical physics on computer simulation and large-scale data analysis.

Investigate a substantial problem in the following sciences:

    • Chemistry
    • Chemical biology
    • Glycobiology
    • Genomics
    • Glycomics
    • Biophysics
    • Chemical physics

And develop a new computational method or modelling of a problem to advance the existing knowledge in mathematical modelling and informatics.

    Assessment
