Masters programme

  • Masters in Computational Science

Learn how to use computational science to do research in chemistry, chemical biology, biophysics and chemical physics.

The Masters in Computational Science is designed to prepare students in the methodology needed to do research in chemistry, chemical biology, biophysics and chemical physics using computational science. These academic disciplines have a critical dependence on computer simulation and large-scale data analysis to understand observed phenomena and advance disciplinary knowledge.

By focusing on either computation or informatics, students of the course will complete a combination of in-house and online training short courses in:

    • Scientific computing
    • High performance computing
    • Computational methods for data analysis
    • Data management
    • R Programming
    • Quantum mechanics
    • Statistical mechanics

    Aims

Learn how to apply scripting, mathematical modelling and informatics to:

    • Chemistry
    • Chemical biology
    • Glycobiology
    • Genomics
    • Glycomics
    • Biophysics
    • Chemical physics

And gain research methodology competence through the investigation of a substantial problem in the domain of sciences.

    Outcomes

Perform research and complete a dissertation solving a modelling or informatics problem in the domain sciences. Produce scientific computer code using C++, Fortran and C, design computational models using Python or PERL, and apply or design analytics methods using R, SQL, MATLAB, or MAPLE.

Work on the frontier of computational science research.

  • Masters in Chemistry (Chemical Biology)

Learn how to use biochemical and analytical methods to undertake research in chemical glycobiology.

The Masters in Chemistry course links SCRU's propriety computational design methods, able to discover enzyme reaction mechanisms and transition state (TS) profiles, with the unit's in-house experimental laboratories to build a rational design of cancer immunotherapeutics and biological testing system.  Projects focus on applications of SCRU's chemical reaction mechanism methods upon enzyme classes that catalyze reactions containing saccharides and alter the glycans on tumour cells.  The resulting project dissertation will demonstrate M.Sc candidates' skill sets in experimental and computational chemical biology.

Depending on the previous formal training a project may focus on either enzyme modelling and/or experimental laboratory research.  Students may be required to complete a combination of in-house and online short training courses in:

    • Protein expression
    • Enzyme Kinetics Assays
    • Enzyme Inhibitor Assays
    • Molecular Modelling of Enzyme Reactions
    • Chemical Glycobiology in Cancer Research

    Aims

Learn how to apply experimental and computational tools to:

    • Chemical Analysis
    • Chemical Biology
    • Glycobiology
    • Genomics
    • Glycomics
    • Biophysics
    • Chemical Physics

And gain research methodology competence through the investigation of a substantial problem in the domain of sciences.

    Outcomes

Research skills in experimental chemical biology, laboratory techniques and molecular modelling necessary for drug design and development.

Work on the frontier of computational science research.
