The Modelling and Simulation Hub, Africa (MASHA) is a research group at the University of Cape Town.  MASHA’s research focus is the development and application of mathematical modelling and computer simulation to predict the dynamics and control of infectious diseases to evaluate the impact of policies aimed at reducing morbidity and mortality. Based in the Faculty of Science, MASHA’s research is closely integrated with other disciplines resulting in policy-driven and impactful scientific research. MASHA has supported decision-making in shaping infectious disease policy in several countries around the world.

  • capacity building in Africa and the developing world
  • promoting dialogue with the public on the contribution of mathematics and computer simulation to disease management

MASHA is situated in the University of Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa. Through capacity building and disease modelling research, MASHA’s influence has spread throughout the African continent and globe.

Disease modelling research has been completed/is ongoing in the following countries: Brazil, Cameroon, French Guiana, Ghana, Guyana, Laos, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Suriname, Timor Leste, Uganda, Vanuatu, Venezuela, United Kingdom, Zimbabwe and the 22 countries of the Asia-Pacific. Capacity building of national disease modellers has been completed/is ongoing in the following countries: Benin, Botswana, Brazil, Cameroon, Eswatini, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
