The Oceanography department’s exhibition at the University’s Open Day was once again a huge success, The positive engagement between staff, student volunteers and school learners played a significant role in the success of the event. Learners were particularly drawn to the department’s hands-on and visually engaging demonstrations, which transformed complex scientific concepts into exciting and accessible learning experiences.

A sincere than you goes to everyone who contributed their time, energy and expertise to making the day a memorable experience with special appreciation extended to Dr Moagabo Ragoasha and PhD graduand Magata Mangatane for their outstanding demonstrations of the departments’ scientific equipment. Their enthusiasm and approachable manner sparked curiosity and encouraged meaningful interaction with the school learners.

The department achieved exceptional levels of engagement by utilizing advanced simulations and interactive displays. One of the highlights of the day was Magata’s demonstration using a rotating fluid table to model ocean currents on a small-scale providing learners with a practical understanding of ocean circulation processes and their importance in the Earth’s climate system.

The overwhelming interest and enthusiasm shown by the learners reaffirms the importance of interactive science communication and outreach. The department looks forward to continuing this tradition of excellence and inspiring the next generation of ocean scientists.
