In a partnership between the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), local and international universities, the existence of a new ocean current the South-west Madagascar Coastal Current, has been investigated. The discovery also forms part of Juliano Dani Ramanantsoa's PhD,Variability of coastal upwelling south of Madagascar  under the supervision of Dr. Marjolaine Krug, ^{UCT & Senior Researcher, CSIR}
