The Plant Conservation Unit's Wataru Tokura, together with his co-supervisor Tania Anderson, attended the 7th annual Oppenheimer - De Beers Group research conference held in Johannesburg from 18-19th October 2016. The conference was hosted by E Oppenheimer & Son and the De Beers Group, and showcased a wide variety of research and conservation activities undertaken by a number of students, academics, and conservation practitioners across their properties and sites.

Wataru presented a poster on his MSc work where he monitored long-term change in vegetation in Tswalu Kalahari Reserve in the Northern Cape Province. Tswalu Kalahari Reserve is one of the E Oppenheimer & Son properties, protecting more than 110,000 ha of beautiful Kalahari landscape for conservation. To monitor this vast nature reserve, he used remote sensing technique to observe change in the past 15 years.

At this welcoming and friendly conference, he enjoyed interacting with other participants, and also had a happy reunion with the students and researchers whom he met in the Kalahari during his field work.

Below is a photograph of Wataru with his poster at the conference.
