Dr Éva Plagányi
Éva completed a BSc degree majoring in Applied Mathematics, Zoology and Botany at the University of Natal (Pietermaritzburg). She then studied a BSc (Honours) and MSc (Zoology) before joining the MARAM group as a research associate in 1997. She also worked as a lecturer in the Department of Maths and Applied Maths for several years. She completed her PhD under the supervision of Prof Butterworth in 2004, and was awarded a National Research Foundation (NRF) President’s Award in 2006. She was appointed a senior lecturer in 2008. In 2009 she relocated to CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) where she has been based ever since. She has remained an Honorary Research Associate of the Dept of Maths and Applied Maths.
Her research focuses on methods to reliably and effectively manage marine natural resources, as well as to progress towards an ecosystem approach to fisheries management, including development and application of MICE (Models of Intermediate Complexity for Ecosystem assessment). Her research involves stock assessment modelling, ecosystem modelling, management strategy evaluation (MSE) and climate change impacts and adaptations.
