My company - Leo Burnett, an advertising agency - currently has two astronomers on staff. I am a web application analyst, and the other astronomer is the head of technology operations. As you might guess, neither of us are doing astronomy - we were hired because of our experience with computers.

The things most useful to me now from my astronomical training were having to learn things on the fly ("here's an analysis program - teach it to yourself and you'll be our local expert"), an intimate knowledge of what computers can and can't do, and knowing how to research even the most obscure topics.
