Dr Carryn de Moor

Senior Research Officer

Carryn de Moor completed her BSc degree (summa cum laude) majoring in mathematics, applied mathematics and mathematical statistics at the University of Natal (Durban) in 1996 and BSc (honours) degree (cum laude) in applied mathematics in 1997. Her MSc thesis Mathematical Modelling of the Cellular and Population Dynamics of HIV and AIDS was awarded the S2 A3 Bronze medal for the best MSc thesis at the University of Natal in 1999. She graduated in 2002 with a PhD in biomathematics from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, having worked within the Renewable Resources Assessment Group (RRAG). Her PhD thesis was entitled Improved Management of North East Atlantic Mackerel, Using Bayesian Modelling Methodologies.

Carryn joined the MARAM Group full time in 2003.

Carryn’s research focuses on the quantitative assessment of marine resources and sustainable management of fisheries with a particular interest in the implementation of Management Strategy Evaluation in different regions worldwide. While her local research primarily includes the species harvested by South Africa’s small pelagic fishery, other current research interests include global analyses of fish stock status and the impacts of fisheries management, as well as the co-development of Implementation Simulation Trials for stocks monitored by the International Whaling Commission and simulation of the impact of future catch limits using those trials.
