In third year, the students partake in two field mapping exercises:
- The Namaqualand field trip is run during the mid-semester vacation in the first semester of third year. It is 8 days long and we visit sites near the Orange River and Aggeneys in the Northern Cape to examine igneous and metamorphic rocks of the Namaqua Metamorphic Complex. We camp under the stars every night.
- The Nuy Valley field trip is during the mid-semester vacation of the second semester in third year. It is 7 days long and we visit the Nuy Valley between Worcester and Robertson in the Western Cape to examine rocks of the Cape Fold Belt. The field area is along the range front of the Hex River mountains and accommodation is on a wine farm in the area.
