The Department of Geological Sciences maintains a number of internal laboratories and analytical facilities.  The facilities are available to both internal and external (other tertiary institutions and commercial) users at affordable rates.  The Department houses the following laboratories/instruments:

Multi-collector ICP-MS
Quadrupole ICP-MS
Electron Microprobe
X-ray Fluorescence (XRF)
X-ray Diffractometer (XRD)
Linkam Fluid Inclusion Laboratory

Sedimentology Laboratory

Laboratories and instruments are supported by staffed, sample preparation facilities and clean labs.

A thin section facility and rock crushing room are also housed in the Department.

In addition, the Department of Geological Sciences owns a suite of vehicles used to support fieldwork and research activities at the University. These can be hired on a first-come-first-served basis.  Contact John Harrison (; 021-650-2909) for more information.

To contact lab supervisors for any of our facilities, go to the corresponding lab/instrument page and submit an inquiry.  Someone will get back to you within 24 hours.
