On Thursday, 12 June 2025, the UCT Chemistry Outreach team visited Eastville Primary School in Mitchells Plain to introduce Grade 2 learners to the exciting world of science.

With larger class sizes, the team focused on interactive demonstrations rather than hands-on activities, but that didn’t dampen the excitement especially as some of the scholars were called up to assist. The young learners were captivated by the dramatic effects of liquid nitrogen, the colourful fun of slime-making, and the ever-popular elephant’s toothpaste experiment. The team also explained what scientists, and in particular what chemists do, helping to spark an early interest in science and discovery.

Thanks to the UCT outreach team Mrs. Laa-iqa Rylands, Mrs Claire Lawrence-Naidoo and Mr Earl Delport for assisting on the day, and to Carol Staney and Noluthando Ngqanya for their assistance behind the scenes. A special thank you to the school principal, Mrs K Heynes and Mrs. Lorette Reed for welcoming us. It was a joy to share the magic of chemistry with such eager young minds.
