Interactive Laboratory Session with Helderberg International School
The First-year Teaching team hosted the Year 7 class from Helderberg International School on 24 July 2025 for an interactive chemistry laboratory session. This was an initiative led by Dr Roxanne Mohunlal, where together with her team, created a ‘magical laboratory experience’ where learners learnt about the wonders of chemical reactions.
To start, they were given a Health and Safety Talk by the CEM OHSE Unit and welcomed to the department. Thereafter, the learners were treated to motivational talks presented by postgraduates Ms Nicole Texeira and Mr Jarid Du Plooy who shared their science journey. Leaners then immersed themselves in the planned laboratory experience by learning to safely perform various experiments, develop skills at recording observations and watch exciting demonstrations.
Special thanks go to Mr Francois Majola, Mrs Joey Paulse, Mr William Chu and Mr Jonathan McKarthy for their assistance in making this experience a memorable one and to the above-mentioned people who have inspired the next generation of chemists.
