National Science Week (NSW) is an annual event, orchestrated by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and is aimed at promoting the wonders of STEMI (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Innovation), through an engaging array of activities. At the heart of this celebration lies a crucial mission: to demystify scientific concepts, highlight their societal significance, and pave the way for future generations of scientists. With each passing year, a distinct theme shapes the activities, effectively guiding the engagement with the participants. The ultimate goals encompass a spectrum of objectives, from popularising STEMI disciplines, to showcasing their indispensable role in shaping a prosperous society, and dispelling the myths surrounding scientific innovation. NSW also takes pride in exemplifying South Africa's global influence in the realm of discovery and innovation, while simultaneously nurturing an appreciation for STEM careers among the youth. This year’s NSW, held from 31st July to 5th August, became a platform for collaboration, inspiration and fostering awareness about the multifaceted world of science.

At the heart of this celebration lies a crucial mission: to demystify scientific concepts, highlight their societal significance, and pave the way for future generations of scientists.

UCT Chemistry Transformation and Marketing Committee members, Dr. Samantha Douman, Dr. Dalielah Jappie, Dr. Roxanne Mohanlal, and Ms. Laa-iqa Rylands participated in an event which spotlighted “Women in Science” and was held in Malmesbury on the 31 July, as part of the West Coast Education district activities sponsored by Eskom. A total of 200 female learners in Grade 9-10 from three different schools, in the West Coast District, attended the event. The event was a dynamic blend of knowledge sharing and hands-on engagement. A round-robin "Fact Hunter" session captured the essence of evidence-based science, showcasing how scientific breakthroughs can genuinely transform lives. Exhibition tables stationed around the venue delved into topics such as STEMI careers for women, acting as a bridge between aspirations and reality.

UCT Chemistry had an interactive exhibition table, where learners enjoyed learning about the intriguing intricacies of polymer chemistry and making slime! It was lovely seeing how interested and enthusiastic the learners were. A PowerPoint presentation was also on display to showcase UCT Chemistry female Alumni and illustrate their diverse array of career paths that a chemistry education can unlock. After the event some learners came back to the chemistry exhibition table and expressed an interest in pursuing a degree in chemistry. The committee aimed to show these young learners that chemistry is not just a subject, but a gateway to an array of exciting possibilities.

As we reflect on this event, we're reminded that the journey to a brighter scientific future begins with such initiatives that celebrate knowledge, inspire dreams, and lay the groundwork for innovation.
