MSc and PhD positions available in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cape TownApplications are invited from South African citizens and South African permanent residents to pursue an MSc or a PhD degree in the department of Chemistry at the University of Cape Town in the research group of Dr Clive Oliver. Each degree can be financially supported by a National Research Foundation (NRF) grantholder-linked bursary, subject to approval by the NRF of the nominated candidate. The projects will be in the areas of:
Crystal engineering of metal–organic frameworks and large supramolecular assembliesValue and tenure of NRF grantholder-linked bursaries:
MSc degree bursary: R90 000 per annum for a maximum period of two years.
PhD degree bursary: R120 000 per annum for a maximum period of three years.
No relocation expenses are available for either bursary and the degree must be completed within the maximum period of financial support, as indicated for each. Continued registration is subject to satisfactory progress as per UCT Faculty of Science policies.
During the degree the student will be directly responsible to the principal investigator, Dr Clive Oliver. As a student the department of Chemistry at the University of Cape Town, the student is also responsible to the Head of Department, and will be required to perform demonstrating and tutoring duties for additional remuneration.
Conditions and Eligibility:
MSc degree:
(a) Completed an Honours degree, preferably in the area of metal-organic frameworks or supramolecular chemistry with a background in small-molecule crystallography.
(b) Be available to commence studies by 1 April 2020.
PhD degree:
(a) Have completed an MSc degree, preferably in the area of metal-organic frameworks or supramolecular chemistry with a strong background in small-molecule crystallography.
(b) Be available to commence studies by 1 April 2020.

Postdoctoral
NRF Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cape TownDr Clive Oliver invites applications for ONE National Research Foundation (NRF) grantholder-linked Postdoctoral Research Fellowship to an outstanding PhD graduate to undertake research within his research group in the Department of Chemistry, at the University of Cape Town. The project will be in the area of:
Crystal engineering of metal–organic frameworks and large supramolecular assemblies
Value and tenure: The value of the Fellowship is fixed at R220 000 per annum and is tenable for one year, with potential for renewal in the second year, dependent on satisfactory academic progress and availability of funds. No relocation expenses are available. The Fellowship carries no benefits and a directive for tax-exemption will be applied for by the University, on behalf of the successful candidate.
During the tenure of the Fellowship, the fellow will be directly responsible to Dr Clive Oliver, the principal investigator. As a postdoctoral research fellow in the department of Chemistry at the University of Cape Town, the fellow is also responsible to the Head of Department and to the Dean of Science.
Conditions and Eligibility: The successful applicant must:
(a) Have completed the PhD degree within the last 5 years, preferably in the area of metal-organic frameworks or supramolecular chemistry with a strong background in small-molecule crystallography.
(b) Not previously have held any full-time professional or academic posts.
(c) Be available to commence with the Fellowship on 1 May 2020.
