Women in Chemistry: Panel Discussion
On Thursday, 5 September, the UCT Chemistry Department hosted an inspiring Women in Chemistry Panel discussion, bringing together leading female academics from across the Western Cape to share their experiences and insights.
The event, organised by the Chemistry Transformation and Marketing Committee, featured an esteemed panel of academics: Dr Prinessa Chellan from Stellenbosch University, Dr Ncediwe Ddube-Tsolekile from Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Prof Lindiwe Khotseng from the University of Western Cape, and Dr Cesarina Edmonds-Smith from the University of Cape Town. The discussion was chaired by Dr Samantha Douman and Ms. Laa-iqa Rylands.
The panellists shared their personal journeys into academia, discussing their backgrounds, the challenges they have faced, and their experiences in the field of chemistry. Their stories provided valuable insights and inspiration to both staff and students, highlighting the diverse pathways and impactful contributions of women in science. Dr Samantha Douman thanked the speakers for taking the time to participate in our panel discussion and presented each speaker with a small token of appreciation. The discussion was well-received, with attendees expressing appreciation for the candid and motivating accounts shared by the panellists. The event underscored the importance of supporting and encouraging future generations of female academics.
A special thanks goes to Ms. Deirdre Brookes for her assistance with this event. The Chemistry Department is grateful to all who participated and contributed to a memorable and uplifting discussion. As the department continues to celebrate and support women in science, we look forward to future events that further promote diversity and excellence within the field of chemistry.
