Thesis title: Time-lapse characterization of the Fimbul ice shelf with seismic
ambient noise

My current PhD research investigates the dynamic behavior of the Fimbulisen ice-sheet in Antarctica by analyzing two fundamental properties of elastic materials: temporal variations in seismic velocity and the repeatability of fracturing processes under load. Utilizing datasets collected by the University of Cape Town, I employ the cross-correlation of ambient seismic fields to track temporal changes in seismic velocity, which helps reveal the rate at which the ice-shelf is evolving. Additionally, my work explores the ice-shelf's underlying fracture mechanics by examining repeating seismic events generated by flexural tensile stresses during crevasse formation. By applying matched-filter and subspace detection techniques, I identify these recurring fracture events and systematically contrast the Antarctic shear failure mechanisms against two distinct geological settings: a tectonically stable region in South Africa and a tectonically active zone within the Malawian rift. Ultimately, this comparative approach aims to deepen our understanding of seismic ruptures and material dynamics across drastically different environments.
