Dr Wilson Mogodi
Biography
I joined the University of Cape Town (UCT) as a lecturer in the Department of Chemistry in January 2019. Before UCT, I was a postdoctoral scientist at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France on the High-resolution powder diffraction beamline - ID22. I was awarded my PhD from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2016.
My current research interests stem from my training in areas of synthetic inorganic chemistry and laboratory powder X-ray crystallography (PhD: Wits university, South Africa) as well as synchrotron radiation X-ray powder diffraction techniques (Postdoctoral fellowship: European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), France. I am therefore broadly interested in using advanced powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) methods to study the structural evolution of functional materials under dynamic external forces (varying temperature and gaseous pressure) which reproduce the materials working conditions. These PXRD investigations will enable us to reveal the atomic structure (arrangement of atoms in space) under their working conditions. This knowledge will be fed back to our synthetic efforts to make new functional materials with improved properties. These are materials which will contribute to South Africa’s renewable energy revolution.
