Assoc Prof David Erwin

Associate Professor

David Erwin completed his BSc, BSc(Hons), and MSc at the University of Natal, Durban, before doing a PhD at Western Michigan University under the supervision of Professor Gary Chartrand. He was the 2001-4 Dorwart Visiting Assistant Professor at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. In 2004, he returned to South Africa, working in the School of Mathematical Sciences at the University of KwaZulu-Natal before moving to the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics at the University of Cape Town in January 2012.

Professor Erwin's research interests are in graph theory, especially distance and planarity. He is the author of more than twenty five publications in refereed journals and has been cited more than 800 times in the literature. He was Managing Editor (Graph Theory) of the Canadian journal Utilitas Mathematica​ from May 2010 to December 2013. He is currently a member of the Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science Laboratory and Head of the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics at UCT. He is a recipient of UCT's Distinguished Teacher Award.
