On the Ice: How South Africans Sample Antarctic Sea Ice
At the edge of Antarctica lies one of the most dynamic and unpredictable environments on Earth: the marginal ice zone—where solid sea ice meets the open ocean. This constantly shifting region is a key focus for South African researchers, including teams from the Marine and Antarctic Research for Innovation and Sustainability (MARIS) institute within the Department of Oceanography. Their work, alongside national polar programs in collaboration with SAPRI plays a vital role in understanding climate processes in the Southern Ocean.
The University of Cape Town is also host the SAPRI Polar Lab, a specialized research, training, and public engagement facility as part of the South African Polar Research Infrastructure (SAPRI). It is home to Africa's first sub-zero, temperature-controlled laboratory, designed to simulate Antarctic and sub-Antarctic environments for research and experimentation. The facility enables year-round studies under controlled polar conditions, supporting interdisciplinary research across the physical, biological, environmental, and engineering sciences. Its infrastructure includes cold rooms, an ice-wave tank, mobile polar laboratories, and specialized equipment for testing sensors, preserving temperature-sensitive samples, and conducting experiments. By providing advanced facilities within Africa, the Polar Lab expands opportunities for student training, scientific collaboration, technological innovation, and public engagement in polar science without requiring travel to Antarctica.
