Water Hub transforms polluted waterways into opportunities for environmental innovation and community development

A recent feature by UCT News has highlighted the remarkable work taking place at the Water Hub in Franschhoek, where researchers, students and community partners are developing innovative, nature-based solutions to some of South Africa's most pressing water and environmental challenges.

Led by Emeritus Professor Kevin Winter, the Water Hub has transformed a previously abandoned wastewater treatment site into a thriving living laboratory focused on sustainability, water security, food production and community empowerment. The project demonstrates how environmental research can create tangible benefits for both ecosystems and the people who depend on them.

Among the researchers featured is Environmental and Geographical Science PhD candidate Emily Nicklin, whose work focuses on ecological treatment systems designed to rehabilitate polluted urban water sources. Her research investigates how wetlands and other nature-based technologies can remove contaminants from heavily polluted surface waters while providing sustainable, low-cost alternatives to conventional treatment methods.

Situated downstream from the Langrug informal settlement, the Water Hub addresses significant water quality challenges caused by inadequate sanitation infrastructure, stormwater runoff and illegal dumping. Through a combination of constructed wetlands, biofilters, sand filtration systems and biochar technologies, wastewater is treated and reused to support agricultural activities on site.

The project exemplifies the interdisciplinary approach that characterises much of EGS research. Beyond water treatment, the hub explores the interconnected challenges of climate adaptation, food security, public health and environmental justice. Research initiatives include sustainable agriculture projects, circular economy models and the innovative "Cool Shack" project, which investigates ways to reduce extreme indoor temperatures in informal housing settlements.

Importantly, the Water Hub extends beyond scientific research. The project actively collaborates with local communities, creating opportunities for skills development, environmental stewardship and sustainable livelihoods. Community members participate in river rehabilitation initiatives, food production programmes and environmental education activities that help foster long-term resilience.

For Nicklin, the experience highlights the importance of research that engages directly with real-world challenges. Working in dynamic and often unpredictable environments requires researchers to adapt continuously while remaining focused on practical solutions that can improve people's lives.

The Water Hub serves as a powerful example of how EGS researchers are contributing to African-led solutions for African environmental challenges. By bringing together scientific innovation, community engagement and sustainability principles, the project demonstrates the transformative potential of collaborative environmental research.
