The University of Cape Town’s Chemistry Department proudly hosted a vibrant and engaging Open Day on Saturday, 25 April 2026, welcoming high school learners and their parents to explore the world of chemistry.

The event received excellent turnout and enthusiastic participation, with visitors engaging actively at the department’s exhibition table. A range of interactive displays highlighted key areas of chemistry, including analytical chemistry, organic synthesis, and crystallography, offering attendees a glimpse into both the academic and practical aspects of the discipline.

The department extends its sincere gratitude to Dr Dalielah Jappie for coordinating the event, as well as to Head of Department, Associate Professor Clive Oliver, and staff members Professor Greg Smith, Dr Samantha Douman, Dr Nabanita Chatterjee, Ms Maryam Fredericks, and Ms Laa-iqa Rylands for generously volunteering their time.

Special thanks are also due to the department’s postgraduate students, whose passion and enthusiasm played a central role in creating a welcoming and inspiring atmosphere throughout the day.

A highlight of the programme was a presentation and panel discussion led by the Head of Department, Assoc. Prof. Clive Oliver and Ms Laa-iqa Rylands. The session featured Mr Kamryn Naidoo, Ms Shannon Misplon, and Dr Kedibone Muguru, who shared their personal experiences of studying at UCT, providing valuable insights to prospective students and their families.

Overall, the Open Day was a great success, reflecting the department’s commitment to outreach, education, and inspiring the next generation of scientists.
